apibrėžtis Iškilmės vyksta stadione, pasibaigus visoms varžyboms. Olimpinių žaidynių dalyviai, turintys teisę gyventi olimpiniame kaimelyje, užima tribūnoje jiems skirtas vietas. Delegacijų vėliavnešiai ir transparantus su šalių pavadinimais nešantys asmenys į stadioną įeina išsirikiavę vora po vieną – tokia pat tvarka kaip per olimpinių žaidynių atidarymą. Paskui juos būriu nepriklausomai nuo pilietybės eina sportininkai. Vėliavnešiai sudaro puslankį už pakylos. Skambant Graikijos valstybės himnui, ant stiebo, esančio dešinėje nuo centrinio stiebo, naudojamo pakelti nugalėtojų vėliavoms per apdovanojimo ceremonijas, pakeliama Graikijos vėliava. Tada ant centrinio stiebo, skambant tos šalies himnui, pakeliama šalies rengėjos vėliava. Pagaliau ant kairiojo stiebo, aidint būsimųjų olimpinių žaidynių šalies rengėjos himnui, pakeliama tos šalies vėliava. Miesto rengėjo meras užlipa ant pakylos ir TOK prezidentui įteikia žaidynių vėliavą, šis ją perduoda būsimųjų olimpinių žaidynių miesto rengėjo merui saugoti iki tų žaidynių. Po organizacinio komiteto prezidento kreipimosi TOK prezidentas sako paskutinę šių olimpinių žaidynių kalbą, ragindamas pasaulio jaunimą po 4 metų vėl susirinkti į didžiausią sporto šventę. Groja fanfaros, gęsta olimpinė ugnis. Giedamas olimpinis himnas, nuleidžiama ir išnešama iš stadiono olimpinė vėliava. Skamba atsisveikinimo daina. Pirmą kartą olimpinių žaidynių uždarymo ceremonija surengta V olimpinėse žaidynėse Stokholme 1912 m. liepos 22 d.
